James Melvin Ellis
James Melvin \"Big M\" Ellis, 63, of Moneta, was called home to be with his Lord and Savior, on February 27, 2011. He was born on July 1, 1947, a son of the late James Dalton Ellis and Maydean Fielder Ellis.
Melvin worked for many companies in his lifetime but his greatest love was helping his brother Danny with their company \"Ellis Co. Landscaping and Services.\" He was a wonderful husband, father, brother and friend. He also loved playing slow pitch softball with his boys.
Melvin is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Joyce Lynch Ellis; his sons and daughter-in-laws, Kenny Ellis and wife Carol of Bedford, Jimmy Ellis and his wife, Jessie of Moneta, and Jason Ellis and wife Becky also of Moneta; 10 surviving grandchildren, Tom Ellis, Daniel Ellis, Kerri Ellis, Cody Ellis, Dakota Ellis, Brittany Graham, Alexander Graham, Betty Hartman, Heather Hartman, Malcolm \"Gene\" Hartman, and 8 great grandchildren. He is also survived by 3 brothers and their wives, Danny Ellis and his wife, Judy of Moneta, Johnny Ellis and his wife, Margie of Reno Nevada, Ricky Ellis and his wife, Brenda of Moneta; 2 sisters Tammie Earick of Bedford and Nancy Bohn and Husband Jimmie of Moneta; many loving nieces and nephews along with his many special friends, and loved ones at Shoprite. He dedicated his life to Men\"™s Slow-pitch Softball. He was the longtime coach of Don Griffin Well Drilling Softball. He loved and treated all his players as they were his sons. He asked that his team would play at least one more season.
So in his memory memorial contributions may be made to, Ellis Softball, 4122 Diamond Hill Road, Moneta, VA 24121. The family would like to thank a very special and much loved Hospice Nurse, Stephanie Smith.
A Celebration of Melvin\"™s life will be conducted at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at Morgan\"™s Baptist Church in Moneta with the Pastor Melvin Harris and Pastor Rick Mallory officiating. The Burial will follow in East Lake Cemetery. The Family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 pm and 7:00 until 9:00 pm on Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Bedford, (540)-586-3443.
