James Morton Gravely

d. January 26, 2019

James Morton Gravely (Jimbo), 70, of Lynchburg, passed away early in the morning on Saturday, January 26, 2019.  Born on July 23, 1948, he was the second son of the late Joseph Morton and Dorothy Justis Gravely.  He was preceded in death by his brother, Terrell Lee Gravely.  He is survived by his wife of forty-three years, Carey Miller Gravely; daughters, Allison Wyatt Gravely and her husband, Ilya Leskov, and Meredith Scott Gravely; and son, James Morton Gravely, Jr (Bo) and his wife Mimi Marshea Vause Gravely (Shea), and their children, James Morton Gravely, III, Harper Lucille Gravely, and Wesley Peyton Gravely.  Also surviving him are his niece, Julie O’dell Gravely and her daughter, Lauren Taylor Wright, and his nephew, Terrell Lee Gravely, Jr, and his daughter Alexis O’dell Gravely.

Jimbo was a partner at Moore & Giles for over forty years, a business and community to which he was devoted.   He was very proud of the growth and success of the corporation, and his partnership with Don Giles was one of the most rewarding relationships of his life.  The first of his immediate family to graduate from college, Jimbo earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee and was a lifelong Volunteers fan.  In his free time, Jimbo was an apathetic golfer, a keen Sudoku solver, and a connoisseur of hot dogs and fried chicken.  Jimbo loved “interesting” facts, “unbelievable” stories and happy endings, but more than anything he loved people.  He was an extraordinary man and a singular friend who loved everyone without judgment or condition.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory located on 220 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg, Virginia 24502.  A celebration of Jimbo’s life will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Peter A Thompson officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation, 1100 Commerce Street Lynchburg, Virginia 24504, or a charity of your choice.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
