James R. Jones, 90, went to be with the Lord on February 26, 2012. He was the husband of Frances Hargis Jones for 67years.
Born December 12, 1921, in Nelson County, Virginia, he was the son of the late Robert Grant Jones and the late Ella Proffitt Jones Coffer. James honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He owned and operated his own business, Jones\"™ Barber Shop, on Main Street for 40 years. He was a charter member of Thomas Road Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons: Gary L. Jones and wife, Beverly, and Phillip T. Jones and wife, Betty, all of Lynchburg; one granddaughter, Kayla Lynn Jones, of Lynchburg; two grandsons, Jason D. Jones and wife, Beth, and Jody M. Jones and wife, Christy, all of Lynchburg, four grandchildren: Landon, Hailey, Cameron, and Parker Jones, four step-grandchildren, and nine step-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers; Willie S. Jones, Cecil Jones, Fred Jones, and Mickey Jones, and four sisters, Lena Lawhorne, Mamie Hawkins, Annie Carter and Betty Dabbondauza.
A Memorial Service for James will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday February 29, 2012 at Tharp Funeral Home Chapel Lynchburg with Rev. David Heerspink officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the chapel from 10:00 am until 11:00 am and all other times at 438 Walnut Lane (off Mt. Athos Road) Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park at a later date.
