James Stanton Powell, Sr.

James \"Jim\" Stanton Powell, 82, of Goode, passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2013. He was born in Griffin, Georgia on April 16, 1930, the middle child of Leon and Evelyn Frances Powell. He enjoyed spending time with his siblings, Bill and Delphine, whom he remained close with until both their passings.

A celebrated student and artist, he was proud to serve his country in the Army during the Korean War. After completing his service, Jim then became a Yellow Jacket and graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a degree in Industrial Engineering in 1957. During this time, Jim became a proud first-time parent to his daughter Paige Elizabeth Powell. Jim, a lover of smart and beautiful women, married the love of his life, Betty Padgett Powell, on June 8, 1968 and became a father again when his son, James Stanton Powell Jr. (\"Stan\") was born in 1972.

Jim was proud to continue serving his country, first at the Department of Defense and then as Director of Industrial Engineering at the United States Postal Service. The perpetual host, Jim loved to throw luaus and was a dedicated husband and father throughout his life.

Jim is survived by his wife of 44 years, Betty, his daughter, Paige, son, Stan, and daughter-in-law, Sarah, along with many close friends and family.

A visitation service will be held at Tharp Funeral Home, 320 North Bridge Street, Bedford, Virginia on Friday, April 12 from 6 to 8 pm. The funeral service will be held at Oakland United Methodist Church, 2465 Goode Station Road, Goode, Virginia on Saturday, April 13 at 11 am with Rev. Dr. H.O. \"Tom\" Thomas officiating. The burial will follow in Virginia Memorial Park, Forest, Virginia. A celebration of life will immediately follow the burial in the Oakland United Methodist Church reception hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to InCare Hospice of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina or to any charity of your choice.
