James Steven “Steve” Garber, 73, died on Monday, February 16, 2015, at his home in Lynchburg, Virginia. Mr. Garber was born on June 29, 1941, in Washington, D.C. the son of the late John Sherman “Jimmy” Garber and Grace Aileen Ridgway Garber Crews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his infant twin sister, his brother, Edward Sherman “Ed” Garber, stepfather, Carlton Crews, stepbrother, Carl Crews, and stepsister, Doris Crews.
Steve is survived by his wife of 48 ½ years, Penny Irby Garber; his son, James Steven “Jay” Garber, Jr. and his girlfriend, Tonya Booth Crowe and her daughter, Hailee; a sister-in-law, Patricia Garber; two nieces, Christi Garber Dunnican and Kimberly Crews Barker and her husband, Benny; two nephews, Nathan Edward “Ned” Garber, and Charles Crews; five adored great-nieces, Kira Dunnican, Llyeke Dunnican, Gerlinde Dunnican, Taylor Crews, and Katie Crews; and numerous cousins and friends. He also leaves his two cats, Lucas and Sadie.
Steve was known to all his friends and neighbors as the go-to “fix it” man and excelled in woodworking as well as many building structures. He graduated from Halifax County High School in 1961 and Danville Technical Institute in 1963. Steve served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska. Steve was a member of Calvary Baptist Church on Timberlake Road, the Lynchburg Civil War Roundtable, the Buick GS Club of America, the McDonald’s Men’s Coffee Club of Timberlake, a former member of the Lynchburg Sports Club, and the Moose Lodge #1727. He was a very proud owner of and showed his original 1970 GSX Buick in many local car shows as well as the National Buick GS Club of America Show where in 1996 he won third place as best GSX.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, February 23, 2015, at 11:00 a.m., at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Louis Beckwith, Jr. and Rev. Mark Beck officiating. Burial will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Lynchburg Humane Society, or the Lyn-Dan Heights Vol. Fire Department.
