James V. “Bo” Hyler, 85, of Lynchburg was called to his Heavenly Home on June 7, 2018.
Mr. Hyler is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Linda Mann Hyler, a daughter Donna Hyler, a son James Michael Hyler, both of the Atlanta, Georgia area; three grandchildren, Stephanie Michelle Ross, Kristen Nicole Hyler, and Lindsey Jordan Hyler also from the Atlanta area, two step-children, Charles W. Hinton, III, Dana Hinton Hoffmann and a step-granddaughter Brittany Elizabeth Hinton of Richmond, Virginia area.
Bo was preceded in death by his parents, Fletcher Hartwell Hyler and Janie Hylton Hyler, sisters Laura Smith Hyler Hagood, Mary Jane Hyler Phifer, and a brother Fletcher H. Hyler, Jr. who was lost in the service of his country.
Following graduation from Schoolfield High school in Danville, “Bo” entered the University of Richmond on an athletic scholarship where he received a BA degree in Psychology and fulfilled all academic requirements for the MBA degree in night school. His education was interrupted by service in the military from 1956-1958.
Following graduation from the University of Richmond in 1960, “Bo” entered into a 31 year career with AT&T, retiring in 1991 as Director of Coin Operations for Verizon of Maryland, DC., Virginia and West Virginia Telephone Companies.
In retirement “Bo” was heavily engaged in golf, fishing and travel from their home at Smith Mountain Lake and Lynchburg, Virginia. He often delighted in friendly reminders to his younger companions that he should receive “strokes” when in golf competition with them, when in reality he often bettered his age with scores in the 70’s. He never received requested “strokes”.
Along with his wife Linda, “Bo” loved his miniature Schnauzer “Lady Molly B” and his cat “Tigger” more than life and reveled in playing with them frequently. She was a constant and treasured companion.
Bo was a dedicated and active participant in the Boy Scouts of America both as a boy scout and adult leader, earning the Eagle Scout rank, and adult leader medal during his tenure. He was deeply involved in the preservation of historic Schoolfield Mill Village buildings dear to former and present members of the community. In 2007 “Bo” founded and became President and CEO of the Schoolfield Preservation Foundation, Inc. with the mission to preserve the history and culture of the former Schoolfield Mill Village along with the Textile and Tobacco Industries supporting Danville economies for 150 years by establishing the Schoolfield Museum and Cultural Center.
“Bo” was a member of Marshall Lodge No. 39, A.F. & A.M. and Kazim Temple Shrine, an active member of the Danville Redmen Poquoson Tribe #124 and Elks Club of Bedford, Va., and past President of Lynchburg Shrine Club. He was also a member of the Peakland Baptist Church in Lynchburg.
A Celebration Bo’s Life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. Masonic rites will be given by Marshall Lodge No. 39.
The family will receive friends following the service at Tharp Funeral Home. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 12, 2018.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Schoolfield Preservation Foundation Inc., P.O. Box 2675, Danville, Virginia.
