Jane Baker Dooley passed away in her sleep on Friday, December 2, 2016, at Guggenheimer Health and Rehabilitation in Lynchburg. She is preceded in death by her parents, Maggie Elizabeth Pistole Baker and Charles Sterling Baker, and her younger brother, Charles Wilmer Baker.
Born in Mobile, Ala., on January 18, 1931, she was raised in Mobile and in Selma, Ala., where she met her husband of 61 years, Col. George W. Dooley Jr. (retired) of Lynchburg.
As an Air Force wife, Jane proudly supported her husband in his career, moving often and traveling extensively. Some of her fondest memories were of their time in Spain with their two eldest daughters. After returning in 1973, to Lynchburg, her husband’s hometown, Jane made a beautiful home for her family, helped found the Diamond Hill Historical Society while instilling a strong sense of community in the neighborhood, and sat on numerous community and arts related non-profit Boards of Directors. Jane was particularly active as a member of the General Federation of Women’s Club of Virginia, holding various chairmanships and also serving as the Alice Kyle District President on the state Board of Directors. Jane was a voracious reader, an expert crewel stitcher, and an entertainer who graciously opened her home and heart to many close and lifelong friends. She was an active member at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and she took great comfort and strength in her faith.
She is survived by her loving husband George W. Dooley Jr.; devoted daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and Michael Sener, of Boonsboro, Md., Sandy and Dave Mied, of Albuquerque, N.M., and Jennifer and Steve Tilley, of Lynchburg, Va.; three grandsons, Samuel, James and William Mied; nephews, Paul and David Baker; and niece, Susie Baker Brown.
A service will be held in her memory at 3p.m. on Wednesday, December 7, 2016, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and directly following, a reception will be held at the family home at 508 Washington St.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to The Boys Home of VA (Covington, VA) for their Christmas gift program.
