On September 7, 2023, Jane B. Thurber of Lynchburg, Va., departed this life at the age of 93. Jane was the daughter of the late Shelley Barnes Osborne, a dentist and the late Hester Louise Hawes Osborne, a sculptress and dental assistant.
Jane was born on June 6,1930 in Woburn, Massachusetts and raised in Newton Center, Massachusetts. She earned a BA in Philosophy and Religion, Phi Beta Kappa, from Bates College and an MA in Psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University. On June 17,1950 she married Arthur Forrest Thurber in North Vassalboro, Maine. They had three children and in 1969 they divorced. After the divorce Jane did some traveling before settling in Lynchburg in 2002. She had written several hymns and some poems. More recently she had been researching early Christian church history and written about her research. She was a firm believer in and a strong witness for the true and living God.
She is survived by her three children: Stephen Thurber, Clifford Thurber and Deborah Thurber Crosman. She was predeceased by her parents and her younger brother David Shelley Osborne.
A graveside service was held on September 20, 2023, at Virginia Memorial Park with Pastor Nigel Alleyne officiating.
