Jane Cheshire Penick

Jane Clark Cheshire Penick of Lynchburg, Virginia, departed this life on April 9, 2013 at her home in Westminster Canterbury. Born on March 20, 1925 in Raleigh, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Blount Cheshire III and Ida Jean Rogerson Cheshire. She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Edwin Anderson Penick, Jr., and her brothers, Joseph Blount Cheshire, Jr. and John Rogerson Cheshire, as well as by her brother-in-law, George Dial Penick and his wife Marguerite.

Janie grew up in Raleigh and graduated from St. Mary\"™s College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Early in their marriage, she held various jobs while Ed completed his graduate studies. After raising her children, she worked in the library at Randolph Macon Woman\"™s College, where Ed taught, and where they participated fully in the College community for many years. Together with Ed, she was a founding member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church and played an active role in the life of the Church.

Among the many blessings she generously shared with family and friends, Janie will be remembered for her gracious hospitality, her cheerful smile and pleasant directness. Her selflessness and commitment to doing the right thing always shone through, as was particularly evident in the care and attention she devoted to Ed throughout their marriage, especially in his last years of declining health.

A world traveler, Janie was always eager for a new experience, whether sitting on the beach at her beloved Nags Head, gardening among her azaleas and Lenten roses, bird-watching, enjoying music, or avidly following the latest political news.

She is survived by her children, Jean Penick Watkins and her husband, William N. Watkins of Richmond, Caroline Penick Willis and her husband Larry H. Willis, Jr. , of New Bern, NC, and Edwin Anderson Penick, III, and his wife, Jordana Pomeroy, of Baton Rouge, LA.; her brother-in-law, Charles I. Penick and his wife, Nancy, of Rocky Mount, NC; her sister-in-law, Marjorie Cheshire of Southern Pines, NC; five grandchildren, William Edwin Watkins, Henry Blount Watkins, Caroline Corbin, James H. McAllister, III, and Ida Jane Benham; two step grandchildren, Jacob Anbinder and Dina Anbinder; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren.

We are extremely grateful for the compassionate, loving care given to Janie by all the members of her Westminster Canterbury family over the past 10 years, especially by those on 6th Floor Drinkard, who enriched her life immeasurably.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at 11:00 o\"™clock at Westminster Canterbury, 501 VES Road, Lynchburg, with a reception afterwards in the Hume Room.

In lieu of flowers, honoring her passionate interest in all God\"™s creatures, contributions may be made to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) or other charitable organization of your choice. Tharp Funeral Home and Crematory, Lynchburg (434-237-9424) is assisting the family.
