Jane Halligan Boyd Whisnant, passed away on Saturday, August 24, 2024. She was born on March 13, 1935, in Richmond, VA.
In 1958, she married Robert (Bob) Alexander Whisnant, whom she first met in the 7th grade. They were married for 66 years. Jane supported Bob through medical school, internship, and residency while raising their first three children, Dr. Robert Andrew Whisnant (m. Michelle), Christopher Boyd Whisnant (m. Sandra), and Thomas Eliot Whisnant (m. Denise). Eight years later, they had a daughter Elizabeth Jane Whisnant (m. Kevin). They have 10 grandchildren: Marion, Caroline, Stuart (engaged to Clara), Ashley (m. Jonathan), Brian, Alex, Ben, Nesya, Amiel, and Selilah. and two great grandchildren (Boyd and Hugh). Jane is predeceased by her loving parents, Andrew Robinson Boyd and Virginia Halligan Boyd, her cherished sister, Audrey Elizabeth Grady (m. Charles), and her beloved son, Christopher.
Jane graduated as an R.N. from Stuart Circle Nursing School in 1956. After graduation, she worked at the University of Virginia hospital, where she reconnected with her future husband, who was an undergraduate there. Her main focus in life was God and her family. In Lynchburg, Jane and Bob were members of Peakland United Methodist Church, and during the eighteen years they lived at Smith Mountain Lake, they were members of Patmos Methodist Church. Jane shared her love of gardening, camping, and traveling with her husband and children. Together, Jane and Bob visited all 50 states and 6 continents. She was involved in her community volunteering with the Red Cross, supporting Boy Scouts, and leading Girl Scouts and church youth groups. All her sons and three grandsons were Eagle Scouts, and her daughter was a Peace Corps Volunteer. Jane had a full life surrounded by those she loved.
The family wish to thank the fifth-floor nurses and staff at Drinkard Health Care Building at Westminster Canterbury for their kind and considerate care of Jane during her final months.
A service with be held at Peakland United Methodist on Wednesday, September 4, 2024 at 2 P.M.
