Janice Lewis Guthrie of Forest passed away on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, after a seven-year battle with lung cancer. She was born in South Boston, Va. on June 18, 1942, and was the daughter of Dorothy Hendricks Lewis Gilliland and Howard T. Lewis and stepfather James B Gilliland.
Survived by beloved husband, Max R. Guthrie, married for 60 years; son, Scott Lewis Guthrie and wife, Janelle (Jan) of Cary NC. The apple of her eye granddaughter, Bethany Paige Guthrie, and precious fur babies Grayson, Patches and Tabby; a fantastic brother, James “Jimmy” Baylor Gilliland, Jr. and, wife Faye of Lynchburg, Va. and sister, Patsy Gayle Alderman and husband, Clyde of Chatham, Va.; nephew, Nicholas “Nick” James Gilliland and wife, Megan and their children Hannah Lane and James of Richmond, Va. and many other family, friends and coworkers. Predeceased by mother, Dorothy Hendrick Lewis Gilliland, father, Howard T. Lewis and stepfather, James B. Gilliland.
Janice graduated from Halifax County High School and Phillips Business College and started her work career as an administrative assistant with Home Beneficial Life Insurance Co. and ERA Hallmark Properties, Inc as administrative assistant/Realtor and Century 21 All Service as a Realtor. Janice enjoyed spending time with family, friends and especially granddaughter, Bethany, and her fur babies.
Thank you to the entire staff at the Alan B. Pearson Cancer Center for their excellent care over the past seven years. Special thanks to Dr. John Macneill, M.D. and Dr. Cecilia MacCallum, M.D. for their professional and personal attention. Also, thanks to the entire Westminster Canterbury Hospice Staff for their excellent and compassionate care. A special thank you to Jasmine, Skyelar, Kelly, Bill, Crystal, and Tabitha for their exceptional care and compassion for Janice.
We are also indebted to Evelyn, Maria, Ada, and Delashi for their loving and special attention to Janice. Also, thanks to Jimmy and Faye Gilliland and many others for their assistance and compassion through this journey with Janice.
The visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg, Sunday, October 22, 2023. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. at Tharp Funeral Home on Monday October 23, 2023, with burial to follow at 2 p.m. at Childrey Baptist Church 1224 Childrey Rd, Nathalie, Va 24577.
In lieu of flowers those wishing to make a memorial contribution are asked to consider the Alan B. Pearson Cancer Center, 1701 Thompson Drive, Lynchburg, Va. 24501 in her memory or a Humane Society of your choice.
