Janice Waugh O’Brien, 84, of Lynchburg, Virginia passed away on December 16, 2022, at Westminster Canterbury. The daughter of the late Ashby John Waugh and Bessie Brown Waugh, Janice was the wife of the late Joseph Neal O’Brien for over 58 years, and a loving mother and grandmother to her children and grandchildren.
Born on January 8, 1938, in Clifton Forge, Virginia, Janice graduated at the top of her class from E.C. Glass High School where she was a member of the cheerleading team. She went on to pursue a degree in Nursing at Virginia Baptist Hospital until her marriage to Neal in 1957.
Janice was a member of Rivermont Avenue Baptist Church since childhood, and enjoyed singing in the church choir for many years. She loved music and playing the piano, and often performed during special church services and served as an accompanist. Janice was also an avid gardener and adored roses of all types and varieties. She mastered the art of growing beautiful roses and shared her knowledge with friends and family. She was an avid basketball fan, cheering for the University of Virginia and watching countless ACC basketball games.
Janice is survived by her children: Patricia O’Brien Campbell (Linwood), Timothy John O’Brien (Laura); four grandchildren: Matthew Campbell (Brianna), Katie Campbell, Caroline O’Brien and Kelsey O’Brien; one great-grandchild: Jameson O’Brien Campbell; and many loving relatives and friends.
Janice is predeceased by her sister Phyllis Waugh Elliott and brother-in-law Woody, and by her sister Bernice Waugh Campbell.
Visitation is Thursday, December 22, 2022, 3 to 5 pm at Tharp Funeral Home in Lynchburg, Virginia. A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 23, 2022, at 12 noon at Peakland United Methodist Church with Rev. John Vest officiating. A private burial will precede the service at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
