Jean Audrey Sproul passed away in Lynchburg, VA on March 9, 2022, after a brief illness, just shy of her 94th birthday. Jean was born on March 23, 1928, in Camden, NJ to the late Walter and Hester Sheilds. After many years in Clementon, NJ Jean moved to Monroe, VA with daughter Susan and son-in-law Ron. She most recently lived at Runk and Pratt Liberty Ridge in Lynchburg, VA.
Jean and late husband George “Buddy” Sproul loved to grow iris and were avid members of the Iris Society of New Jersey. People came from near and far to view their iris gardens and enjoy their annual iris picnics.
After losing Buddy and moving to Virginia, Jean continued her love of gardening, maintaining her own garden in the corner of the front lawn for all to enjoy as they passed by. In addition to her love of gardening and sitting in the sun, Jean loved to read (especially Amish novels), sewing (her quilts are amazing!), singing, traveling, and taking family out to lunch. Most recently she loved to sing hymns and watch Youtube videos and cooking shows.
Buddy preceded Jean to heaven in 1998 after 51 years of marriage. Several brothers and sisters and granddaughter Lisa also preceded Jean to heaven. She is survived by sister Betty, brother Dick (Lois), children George (Kim), Susan (Ron), Cindy (Forrest), Ron, Dennis (Suzanne), and beloved and adoring grandchildren (Sherry, George, Billy, Stephanie, Sarah, Amanda, Krislyn, Melissa, Amanda, Dyana, Forr, Krissy, Angela, Ron), as well as great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Jean also had good friends at Runk and Pratt who will miss her, including Thursie, Charlotte, and Nancy.
There are no plans for a public memorial at this time.
Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
