Jean Muir Cawthorne, 77, of Lynchburg, passed away on January 16, 2016 at Lynchburg General Hospital after battling a long term illness.
Born on December 6, 1938 in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late Allen Andrew Muir and Mary Cruise Muir. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her ex-husband James Edwin (Ed) Cawthorne of Appomattox; her sister, Mary Allen Muir Wright of Fredericksburg; and her brother, John Allen Muir of Lake Oswego, OR.
Jean is survived by her son Dr. James (Jay) Edwin Cawthorne Jr. of Woodbury, MN, 4 nephews, and 2 nieces.
Jean graduated from E.C. Glass High School before attending Lynchburg College. In the 1960’s, she taught health and physical education at Nelson County High School and Thomas Dale High School in Richmond, VA while earning a Master’s in Education from the University of Virginia.
In 1968, Jean returned to Lynchburg to marry the love of her life and start working as a Professor at Central Virginia Community College (CVCC). She returned to Lynchburg College to earn a second Masters specializing in Guidance and Counseling. This afforded her the opportunity to spend the school year at CVCC providing academic guidance to hundreds of students from the greater Lynchburg Area. While she loved teaching in the classroom, Jean always claimed it was the personal connections she made with students and faculty at CVCC, as well as within the community, that helped fuel her personal and professional “fires.”
In 1999, Jean stopped teaching in the formal classroom setting, but continued teaching online courses until 2008 when she officially retired from CVCC.
Jean was active within her profession and in the community throughout her life. She was member of the Kappa Delta Honor Society at Lynchburg College and life-time member of the Virginia Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation and the American Association of Health and Physical Education. She worked with Hill City Soccer Travel program and served as a member of the Sport Capital Board of the Lynchburg Chamber of Commerce. Jean was also a member of Rivermont Presbyterian Church.
Her family would like to express thanks to all of the friends, neighbors, and doctors who have assisted Jean at various times in her struggle to maintain the quality of life she wanted. Special thanks to Russell Jones of Lynchburg, her caregiver and friend, and Dr. Richard A. Miller, her doctor, throughout this ordeal.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 P.M. on Thursday, January 21, 2016 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 A.M. on Friday, January 22, 2016 at Spring Hill Cemetery with the Reverend Chris Deneen proceeding.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Living Stones Project of Rivermont Evangelistic Presbyterian Church, the Lynchburg Humane Society, or the CVCC Scholarship Fund.
