Jean White Thomas, 92, of Lynchburg, died on Friday, January 23, 2015, at home with her family by her side. She was the loving wife of the late Lt. Col. William H. Thomas.
Born in Newport News, VA, on October 24, 1922, she was the daughter of the late John Mercer and Effie Gertrude White.
Before her retirement, she worked as a procurement administrator for the U.S. Government Civil Corps of Engineers. Jean thoroughly enjoyed her years with “Tommy” as an army wife. They were stationed in Germany and the Philippines and travelled extensively through Europe and Asia.
After moving to Lynchburg from McLean, VA, to live with her daughter, Jean became an active member of Peakland United Methodist Church. She and her daughter very much enjoyed attending church together. Jean was involved in numerous bible study classes, and a member of the Cordelle Crist Circle. She was also a lifelong member of The Order of the Eastern Star, Ruth Chapter.
In addition to her parents and husband, Jean was preceded in death by her brother, The Honorable J. Mercer White, Jr. and her sister-in-law, LaVern Carman White.
In addition to her daughter, Barbara J. “B.J.” Thomas, of Lynchburg, left behind to cherish Jean’s memory are her niece, Linda C.W. May (Robert); nephew, John M. White, III. (Lorrie); sister-in-law, Amy S. White; several great-nieces and nephews along with many dear friends.
A Celebration of Jean’s Life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27, 2015, at Peakland United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. John N. Vest and Rev. Jason C. Stanley officiating. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service. Burial services will take place on Wednesday, January 28th, 2015, at 2:30 p.m. in Richmond, VA, at Westhampton Memorial Park.
