Jean Whitt Smith of the Summit, 1320 Enterprise Drive died February 15, 2011 at Lynchburg General Hospital, following a brief illness.
She was the widow of Richard G. Smith and mother of Richard (Gary) Smith who died on September 7, 1998.
Born April 1, 1921 in Cedar Bluff, VA, she was the oldest daughter of the late Joseph E. Whitt and Eula Smith Whitt.
Mrs. Smith was also preceded in death by sisters, Frances, Billie and Josephine Whitt, and brothers, Joseph D. Whitt, and Charles Lee Whitt.
She is survived by two sisters, Mary Sue Whitt, and Sandra S. Whitt (Colonel, US Army Retired) of Richlands, VA, sister in-law, Doris B. Whitt, Avon Park, FL, niece, Denise Whitt Knudtson of Sebring, FL, and nephew, Charles Howard Whitt, of Roanoke, VA; three great nephews and one great niece.
Mrs. Smith was a graduate of Richlands High School (1937), Lynchburg College (1954), and the University of Virginia. A retired public school teacher, she was a life-time member of the Lynchburg and Virginia Retired Teachers Association, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the American Association of University Women, Heritage United Methodist Church, the Adult Sunday School Class, Life-Lighters, and Mended Hearts.
A Celebration of Mrs. Smith\"™s life will be conducted at Heritage United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 5, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Alan Combs officiating. A private burial will be conducted at Hedges Chapel, The Woods Resort, Hedgesville, W VA, at a later date.
