Jeanne Elizabeth Meads Mcdaniel
Mrs. Jeanne Elizabeth Meads McDaniel, 90, of Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away on Thursday morning, May 13, 2010, at Westminster Canterbury. She was the beloved wife of George Thornhill McDaniel, Jr. for a blessed 68 years.
Jeanne was born July 16, 1919, in Norfolk, Virginia, the daughter of Stanton Alphonso Meads and Katherine Gallagher Meads. She was preceded in death by her father, mother, sister, Nina Meads Anderson, and brother, Stanton Alphonso Meads, Jr. She was a graduate of Maury High School and Mary Washington College. As a young woman she enjoyed a career as an airline stewardess with Capital Airlines and later as a pre-school teacher. She was a member of the Lynchburg General Hospital Auxiliary and the Lynchburg Humane Society, where she served as a board member.
She is survived by her husband, George Thornhill McDaniel, Jr., her children; Darby McDaniel Atkins and her husband Donald Edward Atkins of Lynchburg, George Thornhill McDaniel, III., and his wife Andrea Poynter of Richmond, Duval Meads McDaniel and his wife Lucia Perkins of Katy, Texas, her grandchildren; Carey Carter Atkins, Kimberly Atkins Harlow, Donald Edward Atkins, Jr., Katherine Poynter McDaniel, Christopher Thornhill McDaniel, and Darby Meade McDaniel, and her great-granddaughter, Taylor Brooks Harlow.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, May 16, 2010, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg. A memorial service by Reverend Karen Joy Kelly will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, May 17, 2010, in the Weissert Chapel at Westminster Canterbury, 501 V.E.S. Road, Lynchburg. A reception will follow in the Hume Room.
