Jeannette Elizabeth Hughes of 501 VES Road, Lynchburg, VA died December 1, 2016, at the age of 96. She was born May 17, 1920, in Lynchburg to the late Lillian Scott Hughes and James Scott Hughes. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by a sister Lucy Mae Coarsey of Florida.
Jeannette is survived by a niece, Kathy Coarsey Richardson of Garland, TX; and cousins, Lucy Cantieri Alexander of Colfax, NC, Helen Gutridge of Lynchburg, James Overacre of Midlothian, William Overacre of Forest, and Giles Scott, Jr., of Richmond.
She was educated in Lynchburg Public Schools and became a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Randolph Macon Woman’s College. Jeannette was a commissioned officer in the United States Navy retiring in 1966 at the rank of Commander. She found great pleasure in classical music, opera, and was involved in the League of Women Voters.
Visitation will be Thursday, December 8, 2016 from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home on Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg, with a burial at Spring Hill Cemetery on Friday, December 9, 2016 at 11:00 a.m.
