Jesse C Gaines, Sr.

Jesse Carl Gaines, of Bedford, passed away on Saturday, March 19, 2016, after a long illness. One of nine children, he was born to Merceders and Archie J. Gaines of Charlotte Court House, VA.Jesse served in the U.S. Navy. He retired from the Lynchburg Police Department with 34 years of service and 18 years as a U.S. Marshall. He was of strong Baptist faith; he loved family, friends, many pets and fishing. Jesse always had a joke to tell and he loved to laugh.Jesse is survived by his son: J.C. Gaines, Jr. and wife Doris Ellen; daughter: Bonnie Cofer and husband Marshall; brother: T.C. Gaines and wife Ruby; sister: Matilda Owen; 5 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, and special family of Diane Schultz of Washington State.A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at Fort Hill Memorial Park with Rev. Mark Grooms officiating. Military honors by American Legion Post #16.
