Jesse Carlton Cyrus

Jesse Carlton Cyrus, 85, of Rustburg, died Wednesday, October 26, 2011.  He was the faithful and loving husband to Julia Frazier Cyrus for 54 years, who preceded him in death. Jesse was born May 1, 1926, in Campbell County, and was the son of the late John William and Hattie Franklin Cyrus.  He is survived by his children, Jessie C. \"Shug\" Phillips and husband George B. \"Brad\" of Rustburg, Terry \"Butch\" Cyrus and wife Karen of Appomattox, and  Vicki Bowyer of Lynchburg; his grandchildren, Amy P. Tomlinson and husband Daniel of Powhatan, Christopher B. Phillips and wife Amy of Rustburg, Alison B. Williamson and husband Adam of Hendersonville, NC, Philip Adam Bowyer of Lynchburg, Kelly E. Cyrus and Michael B. Cyrus of Appomattox; two sisters, Millie C. Rosser and Annie \"Sis\" Morris of Rustburg; five great-grandchildren , Jacob Tomlinson, Samuel Tomlinson, Nathan Tomlinson, Carter Phillips and Madeline Phillips.  As close as a brother and sister to Jesse are very special neighbors and \"porch-sitting-world-problem-solvers,\" Clyde and Faye Matthews.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, Thomas Cyrus, Edward Cyrus, Albert Cyrus, Russell \"Dot\" Cyrus, and John \"Dick\" Cyrus, and one sister, Mary C. Litchford; and a son-in-law, Philip Bowyer.

All that has been closest to his heart can be summed up in three words:  God, family, and church.  He was a member of New Chapel Baptist Church, where he served Christ as a dedicated member for all of his life. He especially loved children, and was the first always to reach the nursery doors after worship service to spend time visiting with the babies and toddlers.  He was a dedicated deacon and took special pleasure in reaching out to others new to the church community.

During his working years, he was a body mechanic for the Cary, Vaughan, and O\"™Baugh automobile dealerships in Lynchburg.  In his free time, he loved hunting with local lifetime friends and raising a garden of vegetables to share as he visited around the neighborhood.

The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. tonight, Friday, October 28, 2011 at New Chapel Baptist Church.  A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 29, 2011 at New Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Dooley and the Rev. Jerry Stanfield officiating.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family wishes to extend our appreciation to all who have loved and supported Jesse over the course of his life.  He found great delight in spending time with his many friends, sharing stories of days past.  The only formula needed for a wonderful day for Jesse was being in the company of his wife, children, grandchildren, or a friend or two.  He will ever be remembered for \"holding court\" with any audience, for his quick, belly-shaking laughter, and for his simple acceptance and love for all who had the privilege to know him. We also express deep gratitude to the staff of The Summit Health and Rehabilitative Center for its patient and dedicated care of Jesse for these past months.
