Jesse Willard Jenkins

Jessie Willard \"Snookum\" Jenkins, 93, of Bedford, died Thursday, December 15, 2011 at his residence. He was born July 2, 1918 a son of the late Lizzie Virginia \"Pink\" Cox Jenkins and Benjamin Anthony Jenkins.

In addition to his parents, Snookum was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Lee Whorley Jenkins; six sisters, Susie Campbell, Gracie Ella Marsh, Lydia Virginia \"Jady\" Minnick, Nora Lee Graham, Ruby Goldie Jenkins, Virgie Camay Overstreet and a brother, John Marsh. He is survived by a son, Clyde Willard Jenkins of Bedford; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nora Jenkins Sellick and her husband David of Bedford, and Kathy Jenkins Reynolds and her husband David of Forest; five grandchildren, Melissa Lee Millner and her husband Russell of Lynchburg, Vivian Gail Rexrode and her husband Chris of Forest, Ben A. Jenkins and his fiancée, Heather Brunk of Bedford, Whitley Sellick Smalt and her husband David of Lynchburg, and Gabriella Amber Hackworth of Bedford; four great-granddaughters, Raven Elizabeth Rexrode, Caymen Nicole Rexrode, Dixie Lynn Jenkins, Adeline Lillianne Smalt; two great-grandsons, Travis Carlton Rexrode and Cole Millner; a sister, Lottie Lucille Tolley of Lynchburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Snookum was a WWII veteran with numerous medals including a purple heart. He enjoyed telling stories of war experiences and the suffering it took to keep our country free. He worked off the land farming, raising fruit trees, cutting pulp wood, raising livestock. His work ethic was something seldom seen in this day. He loved his family and enjoyed the children most, teaching them trivia about country life and spinning tales of trains around the mountains.

He left this life at age 93 in his own home doing what he enjoyed most working in the peach orchard pruning trees. He will be greatly missed by those of us that called him daddy and poppa.

A celebration of Snookum\"™s life will be conducted at 2:30 PM, Sunday, December 18, 2011 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church with Rev. Rick Dellinger officiating. Burial will follow in Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 – 8, Saturday, December 17, 2011 at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Bedford, 586-3443.
