Jimmy Wade Hancock, 77, passed away in Lynchburg, VA on October 16, 2023. Jimmy was known as a dear friend to all who knew him and simply as “Poppy” to his five beloved grandchildren.

Jimmy is survived by Brenda, his loving wife of 53 years, and two daughters, Kerri Hancock Stevenson (Jeff) and Amanda Hancock Wenger (Danny).  In addition, he is also survived by his sister, Wanda Hancock Phillips (Jimmy), his five beautiful grandchildren, Darrin, Alex, Charlotte, Matthew, and Emma, as well as a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, in-laws, and friends who all considered Jimmy to be a significant and beloved person in their lives. Jimmy is preceded in death by his father, Carlos, his mother, Laura, and his brother, Wayne.

Jimmy was born March 31, 1946, in Livingston, TN where he attended Livingston Academy.  Following graduation in 1964, Jimmy enlisted and served his nation honorably in the United States Navy during the Vietnam conflict from 1964-1968.  After his honorable discharge, Jimmy married Brenda Stewart in 1970 and moved to Lynchburg, VA where he worked for many years as an NDE Technologist at BWXT.

Jimmy was a proud member of the Monument Terrace Troop Rally, a group of veterans who have met each week since 2001 to display support for active US military personnel. In life, Jimmy enjoyed spending his time in the outdoors and in books as well as in the company of his friends and family.  A long-time worshipper at Thomas Road Baptist Church, Jimmy had a deep personal relationship with Jesus Christ and now enjoys spending his time in the presence of his Savior.

Jimmy’s visitation service will be held Sunday, October 22, 2023, from 7:00pm-8:30pm at Pate Chapel on the campus of Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg.  The funeral service will be held at 5:00pm on Monday, October 23, 2023, also at Pate Chapel.  If you knew Jimmy, he knew you and considered you a friend.  All are welcome. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Salvation Army and Saint Jude’s. 

The staff of Tharp Funeral Home of Lynchburg are assisting with arrangements.
