Joan Laflin Rockwell, 69, of Concord, passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2019. She was the loving wife of Henry Hugh Radcliffe, who passed away on September 9, 2017.
Joan was the owner, with her husband Hugh, of Rockcliffe Farm Retreat & Lodge. She is survived by her sister, Ellen Rockwell Galland and her children and grandchildren: Cyrus Eyster (Molly Frey); Eleanor Fahrney (Andrew), Jake, and Lila Fahrney; Phillip Radcliffe (Tori Banton), Lucas, and Zoe Radcliffe; Daniel Radcliffe (Rebecca), and Lena Peters; and Scott Judy (Joy), Emily, and Olivia.
Joan was born on April 20, 1950, in Chicago, Illinois. Having a passion for the outdoors, she earned a geology degree at Vassar College. After a long involvement in the arts in Richmond, Virginia, she moved to Concord in 1993, falling in love with property along the James River. After meeting Hugh at her café/bookstore in Appomattox, The Mushroom Factory, they built their own house, initiated a horse rescue effort, started Rockcliffe Farm Retreat & Lodge, and worked diligently with the Virginia Department of Forestry to create a perpetual conservation easement with their land. At Rockcliffe Farm, she sought to share the quiet joys of nature with all, including taking guests canoeing and hiking, hosting riverfront breakfasts during the Batteau Festival, and teaching horse grooming to disabled adults.
She and Hugh also loved hiking and fishing in the Rockies near Eleanor’s home in Buena Vista, CO. Joan was a committed member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Lynchburg, helping lead services there for years, and was the beloved Secretary/Treasurer of her Christian Science Association for 13 years. She is particularly remembered for her unconditional love for her children and grandchildren.
A memorial service will begin at 11am on Saturday, May 25, 2019, at Spring Grove Farm, 3440 Spring Grove Road, Appomattox. Potluck lunch to follow. If you knew Joan, we’d love to see you, whether you can bring a dish or not.
Memorial contributions may be sent to Central Virginia Land Conservancy (www.cvalc.org), PO Box 12105, Lynchburg, VA 24506.
