With her family by her side, Joanne Gray Kane, 68, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 5, 2021, following long battles with Type 1 Diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease. Joanne was the loving wife of Thomas John Kane for 46 years. She was born on August 4, 1952 in Holyoke, Massachusetts, daughter of James Sinclair Gray and Eleanor Woodruff Gray.
She graduated from Forsyth School of Dental Hygiene and Northeastern University in 1972. She cherished her 35-year dental hygiene career, both for the satisfaction of the work and as a way to form connections with her patients and colleagues. Joanne was active in the local Dental Hygiene association, organizing their annual continuing education program, and was an enthusiastic clinical instructor for CVCC, as an extension of the Virginia Western Dental Hygiene program. Joanne retired in 2013 from Dr. James Peery’s dental office in Lynchburg.
Noted for her kindness and bright smile, Joanne loved to help others and found many opportunities to do so. As a lifelong active member of the Episcopal Church, most recently of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Lynchburg, VA, Joanne served in numerous lay pastoral roles including as a Eucharistic minister. She also supported the work of the Church as a volunteer receptionist, and as a member of the Vestry. She was a Girl Scout and Scout leader for over 20 years and a member of P.E.O.
Joanne was an amazing cook and a talented amateur seamstress – she loved putting these skills to work creating lavish holiday celebrations and hand-sewn Halloween costumes for her husband and children. She made sure her home was always packed with love. She also loved to travel with her family, enjoying barefoot cruises through the Caribbean, Hawaiian adventures, beach jaunts to Cape Cod, Irish exploring and much more. Wherever she went, Joanne was sure to find friends she had never met before, pulling people close with her keen listening, ready laugh and welcoming attitude. In Joanne’s world, friendship and family could be found everywhere, and she treasured family and friends above all things.
Joanne was preceded in death by her parents. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Tricia Beth Kane of Arlington; son and daughter-in-law, Matthew Adam Kane and Erin Betts Kane of Forest; grandchildren, James Gray Kane and Dillon Patrick Kane, and by her sister Donna Jean Robinson of The Villages, Florida.
Services will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Lynchburg, Va., at 11 A.M. Monday, May 10, 2021, with The Rev. Chris Roussell officiating.
Donations in her memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org) or the American Diabetes Association (diabetes.org).
