John Burroughs Simmons

August 11, 1949 — July 1, 2021

August 11, 1949 – July 1, 2021

John Burroughs Simmons, 71, of Amherst passed away at home Thursday, July 1, 2021.

The son of John Burroughs Simmons, Sr. and Glennie Alene Price of Southport, NC.

John is survived by his wife Judith Mussgnug-Simmons and two siblings: Daniel Simmons and Dorothy Lague.

John enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1968, toward the end of the Vietnam War, and proudly served as a Petty Officer 3rd Class, Aircrew Survival Equipmentman (Parachute Rigger).

Early on, John’s innate humble ability to tend shrimping nets enabled him to ‘fish’ for wandering souls, those who were adrift from the Gulf Coast and seeking work in Southport.

He was called into ministry as a young adult and obtained a Master of Divinity degree from Liberty University. John was blessed with pastoring Baptist churches in Burgess, Millborough, and Madison Heights, VA, as well as Bradenton, FL.

He was an endearing Southern man of few words, but also a learned scholar who could define the most obscure words in his sleep. John loved the Dallas Cowboys, crossword puzzles and scrabble; in his latter years, he spent hours assembling puzzles while listening to the radio. John had a signature whistle when he spoke, a witty way of keeping life in perspective, and a dry humor that brought others joy and laughter. John was known for his biblical knowledge and his ability to write intricate sermons.

While he never had children of his own, he will always be remembered for his patient, steadfast devotion to family. John saw every human being as someone worthy of love and respect. His life was a walk with Christ; He lived out all he was assigned to do here on earth and is now home. Please rejoice with us for his peaceful passing.

John was preceded in death by his siblings, Deborah Simmons and Cherrie Simmons.

A memorial will be held on Sunday, August 15, 2021, at 11:00 AM at Solid Rock Baptist Church, 110 Church St. Madison Heights, with Reverend David Cash officiating.

Tharp Funeral Home, Madison Heights is assisting the family.
