John Charles Campbell, Sr.

September 14, 1944 — March 9, 2023

Thursday, March 9, 2023, John Charles Campbell, Sr., passed away in Lynchburg General Hospital. The son of the late Roland and Elizabeth Campbell, he was born in Virginia Baptist Hospital on September 14, 1944.

John received his undergraduate degree at the University of Richmond and his Master’s degree at UCLA. A Vietnam Veteran, he served 13 years in the Army in Special Forces and Military Intelligence. Fluent in five languages, the then Major Campbell left the military to join the CIA. Retiring in 1997, he returned home to Lynchburg.

Through both the Army and CIA, John and Linda lead an interesting and adventurous life as they traveled the world. Upon retiring and returning to Lynchburg, John returned to his childhood church, Centenary United Methodist Church, and joined the choir as a tenor. His love singing also lead him to sing tenor at Agudath Shalom Synagogue during High Holy Days.

Mr. Campbell is survived by: his beloved wife, Linda DeLeon-Campbell. Daughter, Leigh Page Campbell of Lynchburg. Son, John Charles Campbell, Jr., his wife, Terri, and their three daughters, Jordan, Sydney, and Paige, of Salt Lake City, Utah. Sister, Jeanne Clark Kline of Bowie, Maryland.

A celebration of Mr. Campbell’s life and faith will be held Saturday, March 18, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Centenary on Rivermont Ave with Paster Kim officiating. After the Memorial, the family will receive friends in Centenary’s Social Room.
