John “Dan” Daniel Smith, 87, of Lynchburg died Saturday August 1, 2015. He was the beloved husband to Stella Ferguson Smith of Lynchburg and father and friend.
Dan was born February 16, 1928 in Bedford County a son of the late Daniel Moxley Smith and Susan Mason Smith. Dan honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean War. Dan was retired from Associated Transport and Smith Trucking and was a member of West Lynchburg Baptist Church. Dan never met a stranger and was always known to give a helping hand. He loved his neighbors, shared his garden and jellies and jams.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his two sons: Michael Stephen Smith and spouse Robert Michael Sims of Stone Mountain, GA and Phillip Jason Smith and wife Marlene of Pateros, WA; two sisters: Mary Staton of Lynchburg, and Frances Price of Forest, and two grandchildren: Phillip Jason Smith, II and Shannon Elizabeth Smith.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters: Nannie Lee Robertson and Lillian Kiser and one brother Dewey Smith.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until 12:00 p.m. Monday August 3, 2015 at Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg.
A Graveside Service will follow at 12:30 p.m. Monday August 3, 2015 at Spring Hill Cemetery with the Dr. Gaylen Laverett officiating.
