John Douglas Hopton, 89, of Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away on September 22, 2013.
He was born in Wolverhampton, England on September 8th 1924.
John married Lillian Valerie Pearson on June 14th 1947 – a marriage spanning 66 years of love and devotion. During World War II John served in the British Royal Navy as a Coder deployed to North Atlantic Convoy Duty. A career as a professional accountant in major industry led him to work for companies in Canada, England and the United States. In 1989 John retired from Babcock and Wilcox where he was a Senior Buyer. He and his wife loved to garden and travel. For many years they were active members of the Appalachian Trail Club and caretakers of 8 miles of the trail. John is survived by his wife Lillian, his daughters and their spouses, Eileen and Eddie Callaghan and Linda and Brian Duncan, Grandchildren, Shaun, Richard, Elizabeth Deborah and Heather and 7 Great Grandchildren.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate his life on Saturday, September 28th, 2013 between 1:00 and 3:00 at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Drive in Lynchburg.
