John Earl Matheson, Sr.

John Earl Matheson, 90, of Lynchburg died Sunday May 12, 2013. He was the loving husband of Dorothy Mary Matheson for 67 devoted years.

John was born October 4, 1922 in Watertown, MA a son of the late Malcolm Angus Matheson and the late Mary Biddiscomb Matheson. John honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII and then became a Master Pipe Fitter by trade. He belonged to the Pipefitters Local Union #537 of the UA in Boston, MA and also volunteered for over 25 years at Virginia Baptist Hospital. His most cherished accomplishments will be his large close knit family who will miss him beyond measure.

In addition to his wife he is survived by his children: John Matheson, Jr. and his wife Cindy of Lynchburg; James Matheson and his wife Sandra of Jacksonville, FL; Dorothy Matheson Fagan and her husband Robert of Fort Myers, FL; Patricia Matheson Pond and her husband Ed of Stockton Springs, ME; and a former daughter-in-law Elaine (Matheson) Blankenship of Durham, NC, thirteen grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son Dr. Thomas Matheson.

A Mass of Resurrection will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday May 16, 2013 at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Monsignor J. Kenneth Rush as celebrant. A reception will follow the service in the church commons. Interment will be held privately at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
