John (Jeff) Ferguson Powell, 53, of Lynchburg, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010, at Lynchburg General Hospital due to complications from pancreatic cancer. Born June 17, 1957, in Lynchburg, he was the \"sun\" of Carolyn Bryant and the late Jack Powell.
Jeff touched the life of everyone he made acquaintance. He was a lover of life, nature, adventure, and the Hokies. Whether it was hiking the Appalachian Trail as a teenager, riding motorcycles across country with his dad, venturing Alaska, or just hanging out with family and friends, Jeff lived life\"™s adventures to the fullest every day. Jeff was a fighter and didn\"™t let the cancer stop him from doing what he loved. He camped, took long rides on his bicycle and V-Rod, and hiked 10 miles to the top of Mt Rogers before his last days. It is certain that Jeff has already been to the angel-outfitter store and is equipped with the best gear and accessories an angel can have. He was the one in the group that was \"always prepared,\" joking on those who were not and then helping them out.
Jeff worked 21 years for Truck Body Corporation.
Jeff is survived by \"his bride\" Alice Powell of Lynchburg, daughter Michelle Shamer, son-in-law John, and adored grandson Drew of Wake Forest, NC, and his beloved dog \"Banshee\". Jeff is also survived by three \"hovering\" sisters and their children, all of Lynchburg, Grey New and husband Ray, Robin Wood, and Holly Bryant and husband Stan.
A memorial service will be conducted at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2010, at Heritage Baptist Church, across the street from Tharp Funeral Home. Following the service, guests are invited to a reception at the funeral home for a celebration of Jeff\"™s life.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages making a donation in Jeff\"™s memory to the 2011 Relay For Life. Donations should be made out to the American Cancer Society and sent to the Centra Hospice office at 2097 Langhorne Rd, Lynchburg VA 24501.
The family would like to thank all who have touched Jeff\"™s life in his time of need and for the many prayers and support, in particular Dr Cecilia Maccallum and her Oncology Staff, Dr Pat Pletke and Centra Hospice, and the 4th Floor Oncology staff at LGH. You all have been a blessing to Jeff, Alice and the family.
