John Lynch

April 10, 1924 — March 23, 2023

John “Wesley” Lynch, 98, of Roanoke, formerly of Bedford, passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2023 at the Veterans Care Center with his side kick, Beverly by his side. He was born on April 10, 1924 to the late Wilbur Lynch, Sr. and Mora Hix. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 53 years, Alma “Tennie” St. Clair Lynch and three brothers and four sisters.

Wesley served proudly in World War II where he earned the Good Conduct Metal, World War II Victory Ribbon, American Theater Service Ribbon, the European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon/Bronze Arrowhead and a Purple Heart. After getting out of the war, he worked for over 35 years at the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier. Wesley was known for having a good time, he loved traveling, going to the Bahamas, Jamacia and Canada to name a few. One of his favorite places to go was Key West, Fl and was known to just pick up and go on a whim. One of his other favorite things to do was play scratch off tickets and Bingo. He loved walking and it was said that you could set your watch to his morning walks. He was a life time member of Emmaus United Methodist Church. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Wesley is survived by his wife of 19 years, Gloria St. Clair Lynch; stepdaughters, who he considered daughters, June Wooten (Fred), Beverly Grubbs and Rebecca Stone (Victor); grandchildren, Kathy Maggi (Ryan), Cherie Caruso and Raymond Hunley; five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to a charity of your choice.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the Veterans Care Center for the special care that they gave Wesley.

A graveside service with military honors will be conducted at 10:30 on Tuesday, March 28, 2023, at Greenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Tina Yates officiating.
