Dr. John Sickles McConnaughey, 61, died Dec. 14, 2016, at the home he built on Smith Mountain Lake, with his family around him.
Born Aug. 10, 1955, to David Allan Makepeace McConnaughey and Gloria Hoffman McConnaughey in Okinawa, Japan. He grew up in Santa Rosa, California, and the New Hollin Hills community of Fairfax County, Virginia. He knew from childhood that he wanted to be a doctor, and dedicated his life to this calling. He earned his M.D. from Howard University, where he graduated with many honors. A man of profound sincerity and earnestness, he never spoke a work he didn’t mean.
A beloved father, husband, brother, and pediatrician, he touched the lives of hundreds with the gentleness of his spirit, the kindness of his heart, and the frankness and honesty of his character. He is sorely missed.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Blodgett McConnaughey; son, Patrick McConnaughey; daughter, Sarah McConnaughey; brother, David Robert “Bob” McConnaughey; sister, Janet McConnaughey, and Lambi, Raine, Pow and McConnaughey cousins.
A public memorial service will be held at a time and date to be made available through his office at PATHS.
