John Milton Barnes (Jack), 80, passed away Tuesday July 31, 2012, with loved ones by his side, at home in Lynchburg, Virginia. Born in Barrington, Rhode Island on September 25, 1931, Jack was a son of the late Milton T and Florence G Barnes of Barrington, Rhode Island. He was the devoted husband of Joyce McCann Barnes for 59 years.
In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by a brother Wallace Barnes and a sister Virginia Stephenson.
In addition to his wife, Jack is survived by children: Paul Barnes and his wife Denise of Phoenix Arizona, Susan Saunders and her husband Dr. Barry Saunders of Chapel Hill, NC, Jane LeFew of Lynchburg Virginia, Dr. David Barnes of Staunton, VA, and Anne Barnes-Miller and her husband Mark of Chapel Hill, N.C. Jack is the proud Papa of eighteen grandchildren: Kayla Owens, Jeremy Barnes, Joshua Barnes, Natalee Barnes, Benjamin Barnes, Eleanor Saunders, Haley Saunders, Ashley LeFew, Witt LeFew, Claire LeFew, Samuel LeFew, Hope LeFew, Caroline Barnes, John Barnes, Laura Barnes, Zoe Miller, Max Miller, and Eliza Miller; three great grandchildren: Daniel Owens, Jared Owens, and Lily Owens; a sister Gloria McCagney of Rhode Island and loving nieces and nephews.
Jack graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He proudly served his country in the U. S. Army, during the Korean Conflict. Jack went on to work for General Electric for 35 years as an Engineering Manager. He was very involved in many activities throughout his life. Jack was a past board member of the Elfun Society \"" (GE Service Organization) at both the local and national level. He was also a past board member of Visa Yacht Club and Oakwood Country Club, and a volunteer for Crisis Line, Partners in Education, the Indian Guide Organization among many others. Jack was an avid tennis player and promoter of tennis in the Lynchburg area, in addition to being a life-long sailor, and fisherman.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 11:30 AM, Friday, August 3rd at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Lynchburg. A reception will follow the service in the Church Commons. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.
