John Monroe Blum, Sr.

John Monroe Blum, Sr., 90, of Rustburg, passed away peacefully with his family around him, on September 19, 2018.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Virginia Memorial Park in Forest. Rev. Dr. Monty J. Fox will be officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday, September 21 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home in Lynchburg.

John was born in Sparta, NC in February, 1928. He attended Sparta High School in Sparta, NC, and continued on to receive an Associate’s Degree in Electronics from Danville Technical Institute in Virginia.

John married Lucille D. Blum in November 1947; they were married for 70 years.

John retired in 1987 from General Electric where he worked as a leader in the Calibration Lab for 28 years. He enjoyed woodworking and spending time outdoors in his garden. He accepted Christ as his savior at an early age and was a lifelong Christian. He was a charter member of Hyland Heights Baptist Church where he served as an usher for many years.

John is survived by his wife Lucille D. Blum, his son and daughter-in-law John M. Blum Jr. and Vicky C. Blum, his grandchildren James M. Blum (Angie) of Raleigh, NC, Amy K. Blum of Lynchburg, and John Michael Blum of Rustburg, his great-grandchildren James Ryan Blum and Cameron S. Blum of Raleigh, NC, also Tye Wydner and Olivia Wydner of Forest, his brother Joseph K Blum (Jan) Jr. of Clermont, FL, his brother Jack Blum (Nona) of Sparks, NV, his brother Robert Blum (Pat) of Bessemer City, NC, as well as other family and friends.

John is preceded in death by his father Joseph K. Blum of Sparta, NC, his mother, Merle W. Blum of Sparta, NC, and his sister Adele Blum of Sparta, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123. The family of John Monroe Blum Sr. wishes to thank the staff of Autumn Care of Altavista for their support and care in John’s last days.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
