John Newton Gordon, Jr. 92, of Amherst, Va., passed into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at his residence on Tuesday, September 12, 2017. He was the loving husband of the late Jean Harold Gordon.
Born September 7, 1925 in Lynchburg, Va., Newton was a son of the late John Newton Gordon, Sr. and Susan Gunn Gordon. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He went on to become a building contractor and was a lifelong farmer. First and foremost in his life was his love and devotion to his heavenly Father, wife, children and grandchildren. He was a faithful attendee of Rivermont Evangelical Presbyterian Church.
Newton is survived by his sons, John Newton Gordon, III and his wife, Gwen, James Montague Gordon and his wife, Dawn, Timothy Lyle Gordon and his wife Tyger, all of Amherst; sisters, Ellwood Gordon, Kathleen Gordon both of Richmond and Suzanne Heller of San Diego, Calif.; grandchildren, John Gordon IV and wife, Tiffany, Elizabeth Hurt and husband, Ben, Dan Short, Ian Gordon, Duncan Gordon, Timothy Gordon, Jr., Peyton Gordon, and Christian Gordon; great-grandchildren, Abigail Gordon and McKinley Hurt.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Sterling Gunn Gordon.
The family would like to express a special thanks to longtime caregiver Thelma Stecker, Centra Hospice, and the private hospice caregivers that supported the family during this difficult time.
A private family graveside service will be held.
