John Penn Oliver

John Penn Oliver, 80, of Big Island, passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2012. Born September 20, 1931, in Lynchburg, VA, he was the son of the late James Cedric Oliver and Frances Anthony Oliver. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Francis James \"Bo\" Oliver, and a brother-in-law, William \"Bill\" Wells.

John is survived by a daughter, Michelle Oliver Johnson, her husband, Johnny, and a grandson, Logan, of Danville, VA; two sisters, Jacqueline Oliver Turpin of Big Island, VA and Barbara Oliver Wells of Washington, Utah; a brother-in-law, Billy Turpin of Big Island, VA; a special friend, Ann Wright of Boonsboro, VA and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.John received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hampden-Sydney College, where he was a pitcher for the baseball team and a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity. After graduation, he pursued a career in Education. He spent several years teaching and coaching at Boonsboro High School and Hargrave Military Academy.

John retired from Owens-Illinois, Inc. with 30 years of service. While employed there, he worked as Maintenance Supervisor, Assistant Personnel Director, and Safety Director.

John served on the Bedford County Board of Supervisors for two terms. He served as Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Board, and played a vital role in many county and community affairs. He was a member of Big Island Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends at the home of Joyce and Woody Spence. Graveside services will be held at 11 AM, Wednesday, February 22, 2012, at the Big Island Cemetery in Big Island, VA with Rev. Bryon LePere officiating.
