John Powell Hughes, Iii

John P. Hughes, III died on Sunday, December 11, 2011 at Westminster-Canterbury of Lynchburg after an extended illness. He was born in the old family home on Old Forest Road, then Campbell County, on August 7, 1923. He was predeceased by his parents, John P. Hughes, II and Ettie Adams Jones Hughes, and his sisters, Polly Hughes Weathers and Sallie Adams Hughes. He is survived by his brother, Holcombe A. J. Hughes, Sr., his sister-in-law, Pat Griffin Hughes, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

John graduated from Lynchburg City Public Schools, attended Hampden-Sydney College and VPI before being drafted into the Army during the WWII. While stationed on the island of Corsica, he was a crew member on B-25 bombers in the Italian and North African campaigns. Upon discharge from the Army Air Corps in 1945, he completed his master\"™s degree in Architecture at Virginia Tech.

His forty year architectural career spanned from Tampa, Miami and back to Lynchburg where he was on the staff of Clark, Nexen & Owen Architectural firm.   Later he was the chief architect for Coleman-Adams Company. He was instrumental in the design of buildings along the eastern seaboard and his artistic touch can be seen on several Lynchburg buildings. John belonged to the American Institute of Architects and other professional organizations.

He was particularly interested in the arts and while living in Tampa, he participated in the ballet theater. He also sang in the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center Chorus and performed in Little Theater productions.

He never married and was devoted to his family. He lived in the old home place helping his sister, Sallie, care for their parents until they died. As a youth, he was affiliated with the Rivermont Avenue Baptist Church and as an adult, after he moved back to Lynchburg; he was a faithful member of Court Street United Methodist Church, where he sang in the chancel choir. 

A memorial service will be held at Westminster-Canterbury at 11:00 AM on Thursday, December 15, 2011. A Graveside service will be conducted at the Presbyterian Cemetery on Grace Street in Lynchburg at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 17, 2011. Visitation will be held at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg, VA from 7:00 to 8:30 PM on Friday, December 16, 2011.
