John Raymond Whitten, Sr., 85, of Madison Heights, died Saturday February 5, 2011 he was the loving husband of Hallie Coleman Whitten for 64 years.
John was born March 30, 1925 in Lynchburg the son of the late James Ollie Whitten and Mary Burks Whitten. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He also served as a deacon, elder, and treasurer of the building fund at Elon Presbyterian Church. John was also a member of the Winton Country Club, the Elon Ruritan Club, and the American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps.
In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons, John Raymond Whitten, Jr. and his wife Peggy of Powhatan, and Christopher Mark Whitten and his wife Linda of Gastonia, NC, a daughter Susan Whitten Williams of Madison Heights, a sister Maude Dodson of Roanoke, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by 4 sisters and two brothers.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday February 12, 2011 at Elon Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Barry Tucker officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.
