John Ross Bower died June 30, 2012 at home, surrounded by family and candlelight. Born July 20, 1945, he grew up in Idaho Falls, Idaho, the son of the late John Roy and V. Hope Bower.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Patricia Michener Bower; daughters: Anne Hope (Jeff Pender) of Mooresville, NC and Jean Maria (Jim Blevins) of Salt Lake City, UT; grandchildren: Hazel Hope Pender and Oliver Lewis Pender; one brother: Robert R. Bower (Nancy); a sister: Susan H. Bower of Idaho Falls; a sister and brother-in-law Catharine M. and Harry B. Tunis of Reston, VA; a niece: Amy T. Shinkman of Oakton, VA and a nephew: Gordon R. Bower of Idaho Falls.
John was a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and received a PhD in Physics from Thomas Jefferson Univ. He spent a year at the South Pole observing cosmic rays before graduate school. John spent three years teaching at the Univ. of Hawaii and three as an engineer in Reston. The family moved to Lynchburg in 1980, where John worked in research and development for GE and B&W.
John\"™s interests ranged from the abstract-studying science and philosophy \"to try to understand how the universe works\"-to the concrete. He served his church, First Unitarian, as chair of the Finance Committee and pledge drives, chair of the T. Murrell Edmunds Scholarship Committee, and coordinator for Meals on Wheels drivers.
The family appreciates the expertise and care given by his oncologist, Dr. Cecilia MacCallum; Holly and the Centra Hospice team; and Rita Cyrus, RN.
A celebration of John\"™s life will be held at First Unitarian Church of Lynchburg, Unitarian Universalist, on Monument Terrace at 10:00 am on Saturday, July 28, 2012. The family will receive friends at a reception following the service.
