John Salmon Iii

February 24, 1940 — December 16, 2020

John McClure Salmon III of Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away on December 16, 2020.  Born on February 24, 1940, in Chattanooga, TN to Gordon Wood Salmon and Laura Mastin Salmon, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ilona Harvard Salmon, his “soulmate and best friend,” to whom he was married for 47 years; parents; and brother, Robert Mastin Salmon.

John is survived by his daughter, Lauren Harvard Salmon Varah, his son, John “J.” McClure Salmon IV; son-in-law, Mark Andrew Varah; daughter-in-law, Julie Blount Salmon, and his beloved granddaughters, Olivia Varah Romal (Mac), Victoria Harvard Varah, Emily Virginia Salmon, and Kathleen “Katie” McClure Salmon.  Also surviving are his sister-in-law, Mary K. Lucas Drew; brother-in-law, H. Thomas “Tommy” Drew, Jr.; brother-in-law, Earle Farley Moody II; sister-in-law, Mary Louise Moody; niece, Kendall Drew Rasberry (Jamison); nephews, Christopher Mastin Salmon and H. Thomas “Tom” Drew III (Allison), and great-nephews, Christian Thomas Rasberry and Xavier Rex Rasberry.

John graduated from Maury High School in Norfolk, VA in 1958 and attended Emory University.  He graduated from the Medical College of Virginia with a DDS in 1965, completing his dental residency while proudly serving in the USAF, stationed at Lackland AFB, TX and Seymour Johnson AFB, NC.

In 1968, John opened a dental and orthodontics office in Woodbridge, VA where he practiced for over 36 years.  He retired to Lynchburg, VA be with his children and grandchildren in 2004. Among his many philanthropic endeavors, John was an active member of the Dale City and Woodbridge Lions Club with perfect attendance for 34 years.  He was a CASA volunteer and mentored dental students at the Lynchburg Free Clinic.  Above all else, he considered his greatest blessing to be spending time with his family.

A private family service will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Free Clinic or CASA of Lynchburg.
