John W. Carwile Sr.

John W. Carwile Sr., 89, of Lynchburg went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, July 17, 2010. He was the loving husband of Louise Jennings Carwile for 63 years.

John was born August 8, 1920 in Campbell County, VA. He was the son of the late Eldridge Thomas Carwile and Nettie C. Carwile. He was a paper buyer with J. W. Wood Wholesale Grocer for more than 50 years. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army during World War II. John was a Staff Sergeant with Company G in the 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division where he took part in the Normandy invasion and was wounded June 16, 1944 for which he was awarded the Purple Heart.

John was a member of New Chapel Baptist Church, American Legion Post #16, and a former member of the Moose Lodge #715. He was also an avid gardener.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son John \"J. W.\" Carwile, Jr. and his wife, Alice, a very special daughter-in-law, of Lynchburg; his sister-in-law, Ruth B. Carwile of Rustburg; a special niece, Wendy Clark and her husband Whit of Gladys; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Nellie C. White and three brothers, Eldridge T. Carwile, M. Rosser Carwile, and Vivian \"Brip\" J. Carwile.

The family will receive friends Monday, July 19, 2010 from 12:30-2:00 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel at Tharp Funeral Home with Pastor Tim Dooley officiating. Interment will follow in New Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors provided by American Legion Post 16.
