John W. Hawkins

January 21, 1956 — March 8, 2015

John W. Hawkins, 59, of Lynchburg, Va., went to be with the Lord Sunday, March 8, 2015. He was the devoted husband of Jean Hodge Hawkins for over 38 years.

John was born January 21, 1956, in Louisville, Ky., a son of the late Charles B. Hawkins and the late Jean Wayne Hawkins. John worked as an electrical engineer before answering his second calling to be a missionary with Word of Life Fellowship, serving at the Bible Institute on Jeju Island, South Korea. He was a member of Heritage Baptist Church. John decided to follow Christ as a young boy and throughout his life lived and taught the truth of God’s Word. You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free. John 8:32

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children: Jeannie Myers and her husband, Dan of Lynchburg, Allison Boman and her husband, Josh of Muncie, Ind., John C. Hawkins and his wife, Sarah of Chicago, Ill., and Daniel Hawkins of Muncie, Ind. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Anna, Mary Grace, Luke, Johnny, Matthew, Judah, Joy, and Thea; a sister, Bonnie Manning and her husband, Randy of Monroe, Ga.; a brother, David Hawkins and his wife Amy of Sarasota, Fla.; and many other family members whom he loved.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, March 11, 2015, at Tharp Funeral Home in Lynchburg. A celebration of John’s life will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow, Thursday, March 12, 2015, at Heritage Baptist Church, with Pastor Allen officiating. Interment will follow at Virginia Memorial Park.
