John Walter Saunders, Jr., 88, of Bedford, died Friday, December 10, 2010 at his residence. Jack was born on September 29, 1922 in Bedford, Virginia, a son of the late John Walter Saunders, Sr. and Alice Burnette Saunders Phillips.
Jack was a member of corps of cadets at Virginia Polytechnic Institute when he was inducted to the United States Army during WW II. He trained at Ft. Eustis and then went on to serve on active duty in France in the air corps. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church; His grandfather was a confederate soldier and Jack was a member of the Sons of the Confederacy.
Jack is survived by his first cousins, Robert S. Rucker and his wife, Marjorie of Bedford, Frank K. Saunders and his wife, Stella of Roanoke, Anne S. Skelley and her husband, Jack of Roanoke and June Saunders de Souza of Dayton, Ohio and by a special and caring neighbor and friend, Barbara Daniels of Bedford.
Graveside services will be conducted in Oakwood Cemetery at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, December 14, 2010.
