John William Ferguson, Jr. – 99, of Saint Louis, Missouri, passed away Sunday, June 9, 2019.
Born November 22, 1919, in Lynchburg, Virginia, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Joyce Honig Ferguson (2003); parents, John William and Lenore Estes Ferguson; and his siblings Virginia Ferguson Connor, Lenore Estes Ferguson, Marjorie Ferguson Lucado, Floyd Thomasson Ferguson, Sr. and Kenneth “Hank” Estes Ferguson.
He was with First Federal Savings & Loan, now BB&T, from 1958 – serving as both President and later Chairman of the Board of Directors – until retiring in 1985.
Educated in Lynchburg, he graduated from E.C. Glass High School, Virginia Commercial College, and was employed by the Appalachian Power Company prior to attending The University of Virginia.
He joined the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II* serving as a flight instructor, Courtland Army Air Base, Courtland, AL, and later as a fighter pilot with the 8th Air Force Fighter Command in England. His service in the European Theater was with the 56th Fighter Group, who destroyed more German airplanes than any other American Fighter Group in Europe.

John was a Trustee, Life Deacon and lifelong member of Rivermont Avenue Baptist Church, now Gospel Community Church Rivermont; a former member of the Lynchburg Housing and Hygiene Board; former Director of the Lynchburg Retail Merchants Association; former member and President of the of the Board of Trustees Virginia Baptist Hospital, now CENTRA Virginia Baptist Hospital; former Director of the Greater Lynchburg Chamber of Commerce; former member and Chairman of the Board of Management of the Y.M.C.A; former member of the Board of Directors of the Salvation Army; former member of the Board of Directors of the Central Virginia Health Services Development Committee, now Central Virginia Health Services; former Rotarian; and a Member of Boonsboro Country Club.
Surviving are his children: Janey Estes Ferguson Klamer (husband Mark) of St. Louis, MO; William “Bill” Chandler Ferguson (wife Sheila) of Hilton Head, SC and Laura Lee Ferguson Wright (husband Jim) of East Brunswick, NJ; nine grandchildren: Laura Kerley Klamer, St. Louis, MO; John “Jack” Ferguson Klamer, Seattle, WA; Adam Brugh Ferguson (wife Amanda), Charlotte, NC; Justin David Sutherland (wife Eva), Houston, TX; Drew Chandler Ferguson, Austin, TX; John William Ferguson, III, Austin, TX; Virginia Ashbrook Wright, Brooklyn, NY; Olivia Katherine Wright, New Brunswick, NJ; Bryan James Wright, East Brunswick, NJ and great-grandchild Isabel Irma Sutherland, Houston, TX; as well as several nieces and nephews and extended family in Appomattox County, Virginia.
