John William Havens

John William Havens, 92, of Forest, VA, died Friday, February 07, 2014.  He was the husband of the late Evelyn Pisani Havens for 65 years.

Born Thursday, April 07, 1921 in Washington, NJ, John was a son the late Theodore A. Havens and the late Laurina Van Brookhoven Havens. 

John is survived by his son, John Theodore Havens, his wife, Diane, and a grandson, Ian Havens, of Wyckoff, NJ, and a sister,Carol Sutherland of Belvidere, NJ.

John proudly served our country as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army in the European Theater during World War II. Before retiring to Forest, VA, he served as choir director of the Midvale United Methodist Church in northern NJ.  He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the choir.  John was also a certified Lay Leader, frequently serving as inspirational speaker. 

The family will receive friends from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM on Friday, February 14, 2014 at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg.  A celebration of John's life will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Bethany United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. H. O. "Tom" Thomas officiating.  Interment will follow in Virginia Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Choir Building Fund at Bethany UMC, 1276 Bethany Circle Road, Forest VA 24551.
