John William Hensley

John William Hensley, 84, of Bedford passed away on Sunday, January 8, 2023. He was born on December 1, 1938, in Bedford County. A son of the late Elisha Orea Hensley and Maggie Davis Hensley. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Virginia Overstreet Hensley; four brothers, David Hensley, Grover Hensley, Marshall Hensley and Ezekiel Hensley; three sisters, Ruby Draper, Esther Burnette and Stella Mae Hensley.

John was a very simple man. He loved the outdoors and going fishing. His hobbies consisted of spending time at the Bedford Moose Lodge, playing music and he especially loved classic country. He was an avid pool shark and was always up for a game of eight ball. John retired from the City of Bedford Public Works and after retirement went to work for Food Lion in Bedford.

John is survived by his daughter, Angel Rae Courser and her husband, Steve; granddaughter, Holly Courser; Brother, Leroy Hensley; sister, Frances Parrish; sister-in-law, Sally Hensley. Also surviving are numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

A funeral service and celebration of John’s life will be conducted at 2:00pm on Friday, January 13, 2023, at Tharp Funeral Chapel in Bedford. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
