Johnnie Gail (Hennebery) Hawkes, 77, joined her Lord and Savior, on May 20th, 2023, succumbing to the unrelenting decline of Alzheimer’s Disease. She was born on June 6th, 1945, to Richard and Mary Paula (Bower) Hennebery, whom she has now joined in their Heavenly home. Johnnie Gail was the truest testament of showing the beauty and tenderness of God’s love and grace to all whom she encountered. She had a pure servant’s heart, with an unfailing joyful spirit and was known for giving the most love-filled hugs to everyone she met.
Johnnie Gail enjoyed several pastimes, but her greatest joy truly came from sharing and, more importantly, in showing God’s love, which she exemplified in her daily walk. She had a very sweet and special way of ministering to people and was looked upon by many as a trusted confidant and counselor. She was loved by all who were blessed to know her. Johnnie Gail will be dearly missed by her loving husband of nearly 55 years, Walter (David) Hawkes, originally of Warren, Massachusetts, who will continue to reside in the marital home, in Thaxton, VA. Johnnie Gail was the loving mother to a son; Lester Hamrick, two daughters; Monica (Hamrick) McCullough, and Elisha Hawkes. She was also blessed with and was loved dearly by her three grandchildren; Britain (McCullough) Hart, Solomon McCullough, and Ana Hawkes, as well as two great-grandchildren; Peyton Ewing and Paris Hart.
Johnnie Gail leaves behind her siblings; Richard (Huck) Hennebery, Donna Glenn, Bobbie Ann Carbee, and Tom Field. She joins her only deceased sibling in Heaven, Patricia Hennebery, who passed in 2016. Tharp Funeral Home in Bedford is handling the burial arrangements of precious Johnnie Gail, who will be laid to rest in her ancestral family cemetery in Thaxton, VA. The entire Hawkes Family would like to thank Centra-Hospice in Bedford for providing exceptional end-of-life care to Johnnie Gail during her final days here on this earth.
