Johnnie Lu Dickson Morgan of Lynchburg, VA, died Sunday, February 24, 2013. She was born October 16, 1925 in Bristol, TN to the late James Martin Dickson and Nancy Erwin Pettyjohn Dickson. Also, preceding her in death were two sisters, Thelma Babb and Jimmie Lee Dietrich, and a brother, Charles Dickson. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Dr. Evan Morgan of the home; a son, James Evan Morgan of Chicago, IL; and a grandson, Evan John Morgan of Chicago, IL. She is also survived by four nephews and one niece in Kingsport, Knoxville and Nashville, TN.
Johnnie Lu and Evan lived in many communities during their marriage but have been residents of Lynchburg since 1972. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church serving on the Diaconate, Session and as a Sunday school teacher. Johnnie Lu was a member of the Suburban Women\"™s Club and an avid gardener while enjoying a career in interior design. She was a member of the original organizing board for Westminster Canterbury, her most recent home. While a resident at Westminster Canterbury she assisted with the library cart and employee Christmas parties.
Early in life, Johnnie Lu graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School in Kingsport, Class of 1942. She attended Virginia Intermont College and the University of Tennessee, studying the viola and playing basketball. Johnnie Lu was then employed by Tennessee Eastman in Kingsport followed by Eastman Chemical Products in New York. During her employment in New York she launched the marketing program for Kodel, one of the first polyester fibers. It was also at this time that she met her future husband, Evan.
A memorial service is scheduled for Sunday, March 3, 2013 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel at Westminster Canterbury with the Rev. Caitilin Hoy presiding. Another memorial service will be scheduled at a later date to be held at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. John Scholer presiding. Announcement of that memorial service will be published.
