On Tuesday, August 8, 2023, God saw that Joseph A. Carter was getting tired and needed rest from his labor. God whispered gently to Joseph “My son come on home and take your rest.”
Joseph was the son of the late Benjamin and Mary E. Carter. He was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia E. Henderson; two brothers, Robert and John Carter; one brother-in-law, Velton T. Garden; one aunt, Virginia Ford; one uncle, Jessie Irving; and a host of other relatives.
Joseph attended school in Nelson County and joined Pine Hill Baptist Church at an early age. While at Pine Hill, Joseph was a faithful member of the Pine Hill Male Choir where he led many songs. The first song he led was “Don’t Forget the Family Prayer”. In addition, he also served on the Trustee Board of the church.
Joseph, affectionately known as “Joe Pete”, enjoyed working in his yard and the grounds at church as well as hanging out with his friends and having fun.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 30 years, Ernestine; stepson, Vincent Jackson of Lynchburg; one sister, Alice Roberta Gardner of Lynchburg; one brother, Warren Carter of Maryland one brother-in-law, Chestine Henderson of Tye River; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Bailey of Monroe, and Dorothy Carter of Tye River; nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 15, 2023 at Scottzion Baptist Church, Madison Heights Va. Visitation will be held on Monday, August 14, 2023 from 6 to 7 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home, Madison Heights, VA. At the family’s request, masks are required. Thank you for your cooperation.
