Joseph Edley Thornton, 90, died December 30, 2014, at Westminster Canterbury of natural causes.
Joe was born November 30, 1924, in DuQuoin, Perry County, Illinois, the son of Leslie and Ruth Kelly Thornton.
He served his country honorably as an officer in the US Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean War. He was a teacher of history and Spanish, both in high school in DuQuoin, and college near Chicago. He was active in theatrics and loved his cats.
His wife of over 50 years, Betty Jeanne McConnell Thornton, preceded him in death.
Surviving family include Cathie Wilton, of St. Simons Island, Georgia, and Dr. Robert Hickman of Lynchburg, Virginia. He has many good friends at Westminster Canterbury.
There will be a memorial service in the Westminster Canterbury Chapel on Thursday, January 8, 2015, at 2 PM.
